April 26: Movie: The Way Out (Dharma Center)

April 26, 6pm, movie followed by discussion. Free.

This one-hour movie inspired by the activism of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh. “The way out is in,” he states. “The way out of climate change is inside each of us.” His invitation is to stop: to stop running and to take a good look at what is really going on. To see what views drive our behavior, how our thought patterns and our emotions work, and why we got into trouble with the climate in the first place. In silence, we will better understand ourselves and the Earth.

This film, "The Way Out,"  follows two young people, a Brazilian banker and a British activist, during a stressful period in their lives and explores how their inside work reflects into the world.

Postponed to May 13. Two Methods for Harvesting Rainwater (Columbine Landscapes, 4CORE) Register

time lapse photography of water hitting left palm

Sorry, due to illness, this event is rescheduled for May 13.

Rainwater Harvesting

May 13, 5:30 pm

Free but please register. See link below.

Santa Rita Water Water Reclamation Facility

Rainwater harvesting is nothing new; it just went out of vogue for the last few centuries. There are 2 primary ways to do it, both perfectly legal: rain gardens and rain barrels. The two are used for different purposes, and can be used together, with the end result keeping every drop of rain on your property to hydrate the land for fire resistance; to save money and energy; have healthier plants; prevent flooding; and mitigate erosive cutting during storms.

Eva Montane, Rain Garden Designer from Columbine Landscapes Co, and Molly Morris from 4CORE will help you work through which method to use for your intended purpose, given your specific site parameters. You will leave with simple steps to take for implementation at home.

The meeting place for the event is a rain garden designed by Eva.

Special instructions

  • Free, but please register at https://columbinelandscapes.com/event-workshop-registration/
  • Bring photos of all sides of your home for reference. Be sure to include the top of the roof all the way to the outlet of downspouts if you have them.

  • Come prepared to be outside.

MAY 18: Repair Café (Durango Tool Library)

Don't despair, repair! Bring your wobbly chairs, torn shirts, shattered phone screens, malfunctioning bicycles, and toasters on-the-blink to the Repair Café. A crew of volunteers will be on-hand to help you diagnose and fix your things.

By connecting people who know how to repair with people who have things that need repair, we can ensure more things are fixed and used, instead of discarded and replaced.

Volunteers will help you troubleshoot your broken thing, and provide a prescription for how it can be repaired. When possible, volunteers will help you make on-site, real-time repairs—and send you home with a fixed thing. For other repairs, like those that require specialized replacement parts, the prescription will guide you through what's needed to repair the item.

@Kiddos and doggos: Bring your sick and wounded stuffed animals to the Stuffed Animal Hospital. Volunteers will be ready to give your stuffed animal special care, like replacing missing stuffing and patching any holes, so you can keep playing with your stuffie.

There is no fee for participating in this event, but there will be local coffee cart and drink vendors onsite offering yummy beverages for purchase. Get a drink for you and, perhaps, for a volunteer? It is a repair "café" after all! Come enjoy a refreshment while repairing and learning.

When: Sunday, April 20th from 10am - 2pm.

Where: Durango Tool Library, 278 Sawyer Drive, Unit 4A.

How to participate:

  • To attend and get your things fixed: No sign up required. No fees to participate. Come on Sunday, April 20th and bring one thing to be repaired.

  • To volunteer and help fix things: Volunteers are needed to staff repair stations. If you are interested in helping, please reach out to librarian@durangotoollibrary.com.

To learn more about the event please check out durangotoollibrary.com.

If you have any questions, please reach out to librarian@durangotoollibrary.com.
